Two people have been taken to the hospital after someone with a gunshot wound crashed into another vehicle Thursday evening.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. near 51st Avenue and Monte Vista Road, just north of McDowell Road.

Phoenix police say they responded to reports of a crash in the area. When they arrived on scene it was discovered that one of the patients had been shot before the crash occurred. That person has been taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses say an Altima was driving in the area and rear-ended a stopped Honda.

The driver of the Altima was pulled from the vehicle and it was discovered they had been previously shot. Police say the gunshot wound caused the crash.

Firefighters say one other person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police have not been able to determine the circumstance of the gunshot wound, or if there are any suspects outstanding. It's unclear how much time passed between the person being shot, and the crash.
