PHOENIX — A 14-year-old boy was taken into custody Wednesday morning after allegedly firing a gun at Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers.

A DPS spokesperson said a trooper attempted to stop a vehicle near 27th Avenue and Bethany Home Road shortly after midnight for driving without its headlights on.

The driver did not stop, DPS said, and continued driving. Eventually, the vehicle stopped in a neighborhood near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

As soon as the vehicle stopped, the driver began shooting at the trooper, who returned fire with his rifle, according to DPS.

The suspect ran off, but was located by the Phoenix Police Department's helicopter in a nearby alleyway and arrested, DPS said.

There were no other injuries.

The teen was booked into a Maricopa County juvenile facility under charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and misconduct with a weapon.
