Phoenix Police say a 23-year-old man is dead after a shooting at a West Phoenix apartment complex Saturday night.

The incident took place around 10:45 p.m. near 81st Avenue and Indian School Road.

Brett Berholtz died at the hospital after he was shot several times, police say. A 22-year-old woman was also grazed by one of the bullets, suffering a non-life threatening injury.

Police believe the shooting occurred while both victims were standing outside in the parking lot. A passenger car reportedly drove past and began firing shots.

"It doesn’t make any sense,” Berholtz’s longtime friend, Amanda Kilpatrick, said. “There’s not a single person that could have a bad thing to say about him, so for this to happen is just awful.”

There is no suspect description at this time, but police are working to learn more about the suspect and motive.
