PHOENIX — A cockfighting bust has resulted in the seizure of more than 300 roosters and hens.

The Phoenix Police Department says officers were alerted of a possible animal cruelty case and illegal gambling on Thursday.

When officers showed up to the area near 7th Street and Broadway Road a group of people started running away.

Officers were able to detain several of them and discovered evidence of a cockfighting operation.

The Arizona Humane Society was called out to investigate and after obtaining a search warrant officials found 203 roosters, over 100 hens and two dogs.

The two dogs were said to be in such poor condition that the humane society had to take them to get treated.

A total of 10 people were cited and released for being present during the illegal operation.

The investigation is ongoing.
