Teenage bicyclist dead after being struck by teenage driver in south Phoenix

A 13-year-old bicyclist is dead after a teenage driver struck him with his car in south Phoenix Friday afternoon.

Authorities responded to the area of Broadway Road and 19th Avenue after receiving reports of a rollover crash involving a car and bicyclist.

Witnesses told police that a vehicle was driving south along 19th Avenue when the 17-year-old driver crossed over the northbound lanes of 19th Avenue and struck the victim who was riding his bike on the sidewalk.

Phoenix Police Sergeant Mercedes Fortune said identified the victim as Cordell Gooch.

Police say Gooch was thrown 75-feet from the bike after being hit by the car.

Gooch died at the scene, a Phoenix fire spokesperson said. The male driver involved in the crash is cooperating with the investigation.

Early reports indicate that the driver was possibly impaired.

Sergeant Fortune said charges are pending the toxicology reports, and reconstruction of the collision.
