A wrong-way crash that seriously hurt four people shut down southbound lanes of Interstate 17 north of the Valley early Tuesday morning.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the southbound lanes of I-17 were blocked at milepost 252, the Sunset Point rest area. It reopened around 6:30 a.m.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says a Pontiac sedan headed northbound in the southbound lanes struck a Toyota Rav4 head-on before 3 a.m. Three people were in the victim vehicle and only one person was in the wrong-way vehicle.

Both cars were reportedly fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived at the scene. Four people were taken to the hospital - two by helicopter - with serious injuries.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, but DPS says impairment has not been ruled out.
