PHOENIX — A 60-year-old woman is dead following an early morning crash in West Phoenix, according to police.

Police say an SUV was traveling eastbound on Thunderbird Road around 4 a.m. when it struck a "flatbed auto-hauler-style trailer" near 37th Avenue that had become disconnected from its vehicle and was left abandoned in the roadway.

The collision caused the driver of the SUV to lose control of the vehicle and slam into a light pole.

Police say the Phoenix Fire Department pulled out a man and woman from the SUV.

The passenger, later identified as 60-year-old Judith Fuentes, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, not identified by police, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the flatbed trailer returned to the scene after the collision, police say.

The investigation is ongoing. Police have not determined whether charges will be filed.
