Police are investigating after a man and a dog were shot Friday afternoon during an event in north Phoenix.

Officers were called to Front Porch Pickins near Turf Paradise Friday, a racetrack located at Bell Road and 7th Avenue, around 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.

According to witnesses, two dogs got into a fight and one of the dog owners shot at the other dog to stop it. Police say the round ricocheted and struck the other dog owner in the foot.

A spokesperson for Encore Agency says the man that was shot was a volunteer for a dog rescue.

Air15 flew over the scene this afternoon to get an aerial view:

The victim is hospitalized after suffering a non-life-threatening injury. The dog was also injured but is expected to be OK.

No additional information was immediately available but an investigation is ongoing. The dog owner who shot the victim is cooperating with the police investigation.

Saturday events at the grounds are expected to continue as usual, an Encore spokeswoman said.
