An 18-month-old boy is in extremely critical condition after being pulled from a pool Monday evening.

Rescue crews were called to the scene near Seventh Avenue and Bell Road around 7 p.m.

Phoenix police said there was a gathering at the home. The child was discovered in the swimming pool, and bystanders performed CPR until first responders arrived.

Firefighters were able to get a pulse back while on scene, but said the toddler did not regain consciousness. He was taken to a pediatric facility in "extremely critical" condition, according to a fire department spokesman.

In an update, Phoenix police said the child was breathing on its own at the hospital.

Authorities did not immediately know how long the child was submerged.

No other information was immediately available. ABC15 has a crew on the scene.
