PHOENIX — A pedestrian has died after being struck by the light trail near 19th and Montebello avenues, according to Phoenix police.

According to Captain Rob McDade, a Public Information Officer for the Phoenix Fire Department, a man was transported to an area hospital in extremely critical condition.

Firefighters had to use airbags to lift the light rail off of the man, after he was pinned underneath.

"We set up a three station airbag lift and we were able to lift the train off of him within a couple minutes," said Captain Greg Hawk with the Phoenix Fire Department. "You could tell that he was breathing, he was definitely in a bad situation. It was critical for us to get him out as quickly as possible."

At this time, it is unclear how the man was struck.

The roadway was closed in the area for about two hours.

"It's rare to see someone trapped underneath light rail- actually- my first time ever," Hawk said.

Officials said on March 7 the victim, identified as 59-year-old Darryl Hutchison, died from his injuries.

Phoenix police are continuing to investigate the incident.
