PHOENIX — A suspect has been arrested after killing a man near 19th Avenue and Deer Valley Road Sunday morning, police say.

According to Phoenix police, when they arrived around 7 a.m., they located 49-year-old Scott Russell who was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to police documents, the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Juan Reyes, gave multiple versions of the story of what happened during the altercation.

Police determined that Russell picked up Reyes early Sunday morning. They engaged in sexual acts and Reyes reportedly drank alcohol while Russell worked on his vehicle. The two reportedly got into a fight about drug use and music, and Reyes admitted to police he "went overboard" during their physical altercation, documents show.

Police say video from a nearby surveillance camera captured part of the incident, showing the victim trying to get away from Reyes.

Officers who responded to the scene were initially told the fight involved a crowbar, but Reyes denied the use of a crowbar. Police documents show that the assault that led to the victim's death was done with "hands and feet."

The victim and suspect had reportedly been friends and known each other for a few months, police say.

Reyes was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.
