PHOENIX — A 5-year-old boy has died after being hit by a vehicle at an apartment complex near Maryland Avenue and the I-17.

The Phoenix Fire Department says the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Branden Weaver Jr was taken to the hospital after witnesses performed CPR on scene, but he did not survive.

Police said the child reportedly ran between two parked vehicles into the roadway, where he was then struck by a pickup truck traveling westbound on Maryland Avenue.

Police say there were no signs suggesting that impairment or excessive speed played a factor in the incident.

An investigation is underway.
