A Phoenix Motel 6 security guard called 911 after being shot, likely saving other lives, ABC15 has learned.

Brian Harris, 44, died of his wounds Sunday night. He was one of two people killed in the crime spree that started at the motel, Phoenix police said. Paramedics arrived in time to save a co-worker. Two other people were also shot and injured.

Phoenix police officers visited Harris' family Wednesday afternoon. They expressed their condolences, hugged relatives and thanked them for Harris' service to the community.

Officers describe Harris as a civilian partner and said he was an essential part of keeping the area safe around Interstate 17 and Northern Avenue.

"There was not a single night that I would work or my partners would work that we wouldn't stop in and check on Brian," Det. Joseph Mills said. "He was that important to us."

As family members grieve, they also know that their son, brother and father was an everyday hero.
