PHOENIX — Fire crews evacuated the area surrounding a north Phoenix business complex after a pile of lithium batteries caught fire outside one of the buildings Tuesday afternoon.

Phoenix fire officials say crews responded to the scene near 16th Street and Deer Valley Drive and worked to ventilate the building and to protect people from exposure to the residual smoke.

The inside of the building was cleared and the fire didn't extended to the structure.

Officials said three patients at the scene were treated for inhalation exposure.

One of the patients, a 47-year-old man, was transported to the hospital for further evaluation, but the other two did not need to be hospitalized.
