Authorities are releasing the name of a man shot and killed by an off-duty officer in north Phoenix Saturday afternoon.

Officers were called to the area of Interstate 17 and Cactus Road around 5:15 p.m. after an off-duty officer shot 27-year-old Humberto Edwards after allegedly witnessing him attempting to steal three cars.

Shortly before the shooting, Humberto allegedly got on a Valley Metro Bus near 49th Avenue and Cactus Road armed with two knives, authorities said.

After boarding the bus, Humberto told the bus driver to “just drive.” During the incident, the driver suffered a cutting injury and a passenger was stabbed but is expected to be OK.

The officer’s name hasn’t been released, but a Phoenix Police spokesperson says he is a sergeant with 10 years of service with the department.
