Troopers are investigating after the driver of a truck crashed into stranded motorists out changing a flat tire on Interstate 17 in Phoenix.

The incident happened just before midnight on Monday in the area of I-17 and 16th Street.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says three people were standing outside of their vehicle attempting to change a flat fire on the far right shoulder of southbound I-17 when they were struck by a southbound pickup truck.

One of the victims, a 22-year-old man, died at the hospital. Two others outside of the stranded vehicle and a female who remained inside were all said to have non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck was taken into custody on suspicion of impairment.

The roadway reopened around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
