A person was killed in a crash on Interstate 17 in Phoenix Sunday morning.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash happened on northbound I-17, south of Camelback Road.

Troopers say just after 5:30 a.m. the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the wall on the right shoulder.

The sole passenger was reportedly ejected from the car and later pronounced dead.

Troopers say the driver tried to flee the scene but was taken into custody in a nearby neighborhood.

Sunday evening authorities identified the victim as 24-year-old Verennice Mastache, of Phoenix. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Jaime Muro, also of Phoenix. Muro will be charged with one count of manslaughter in Mastache's death, according to Raul Garcia with the Department of Public Safety.

Authorities believe impairment is a factor in this collision.

I-17 northbound was closed at Indian School Road for several hours as troopers investigated.

The roadway has since reopened.
