PHOENIX — A woman and 8-year-old boy are recovering after being struck by a suspected impaired driver Saturday night.

Phoenix police say officers were stopped at the intersection of 24th and Van Buren streets when they saw a vehicle turning left on 24th Street collide with the woman and young boy who were walking in the crosswalk.

Officers say the driver, identified as 58-year-old Abe F. Mejia, remained on scene and was evaluated for impairment. He was arrested a short time later.

The woman and child were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police say.

Mejia was arrested and booked into the 4th Avenue Jail for one count of driving under the influence and one count of driving under the influence with a BAC of .08 or more.
