PHOENIX — Police say a 22-year-old woman was hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting at an apartment complex in Ahwatukee Wednesday night.

Officers were called to the scene near 48th Street and Warner Road after receiving reports of a woman, later identified as Hannah Kyyitan, 22, at the complex who was threatening to hurt herself and others.

Police say when officers arrived on scene, they heard a gunshot inside one of the apartments. Officers evacuated the homes nearby so they, along with mental health experts from Terros Health, could safely negotiate with Kyyitan to come out of the home.

Authorities say after about an hour, the woman opened the front door and officers saw she was armed with a shotgun.

Kyyitan ignored repeated commands to drop the gun and when she raised it, one officer fired a single shot, hitting her arm causing her to drop the weapon.

Officers quickly put a tourniquet on Kyyitan and emergency crews took her to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Phoenix police say that their crisis response team had not yet arrived and was still en route to the scene at the time of the shooting.

Police say no officers were hurt during the incident.

Kyyitan has been booked on two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, and one count of aggravated assault.
