Phoenix Fire Department says a family was woken up by neighbors who alerted them that their home was on fire Thursday morning.
Flames were reportedly shooting out of the side of the home near 16th Avenue and McKinley Street, but all six people inside were able to make it out safely.
Firefighters rescued birds that were in a cage on the back patio from being harmed by smoke or flames.
The home did not have working smoke detectors. Fire officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
