PHOENIX — Multiple people are in custody after shots were fired toward a Department of Public Safety trooper in Phoenix early Wednesday morning.

Troopers were called to the area of Interstate 17 and Interstate 10 in Phoenix just after midnight where a pedestrian, later identified as 18-year-old Lorenzo J. Munoz, was in the roadway. DPS says Munoz was combative toward the responding trooper but was eventually taken into custody.

After Munoz was taken into custody, DPS says multiple shots were fired from a nearby industrial area toward troopers, hitting one of the DPS vehicles.

Officers patrolled the area and took three people, identified as Israel Herrera, 19, Mykel A. Flores, 18, and J’Vonn D. Caldwell, 21, into custody near 25th Avenue and Holly Street.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the ordeal. Troopers say a gray two-door Mitsubishi vehicle previously reported as stolen was also recovered from the area.

All four suspects are facing multiple charges, including: attempted homicide on law enforcement, aggravated assault on law enforcement, unlawful use of means of transportation, resisting arrest, criminal damage and hindering prosecution.

Arizona Department of Transportation officials say the northbound and southbound ramps from I-17 to westbound I-10 were closed at the Stack due to the investigation.
