PHOENIX — The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that K-9 Yankee had to be laid to rest after a very aggressive brain tumor.

MCSO says Yankee was in the process of retiring when symptoms rapidly escalated.

“It is a sad day for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. With broken hearts, we announce that #K9Yankee was laid to rest today. He was suffering from a very aggressive brain tumor and after consulting with our veterinarian the humane decision was made,” MCSO said in a statement. “Yankee was in the process of retiring when symptoms rapidly escalated. It's never easy to say goodbye to a partner & friend, especially Yankee who was a unit and even office favorite. He was a special K9 who did his job extremely well. Rest easy K9 Yankee, you will not be forgotten 💙🐺💙 11/17/2020.”

MCSO says it will put out a tribute video soon for K9 Yankee.
