PHOENIX — A driver is facing charges after going the wrong-way on Interstate 17 in Phoenix.

The Department of Public Safety says just after 2:00 a.m. Sunday, troopers were alerted by Wrong Way Detection Sensors at I-17 and McDowell Road.

Hector Smith-Soto, 28, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

DPS says the driver eventually corrected its direction of travel and was met by troopers.

Signs of impairment were noticed while attempting to stop the vehicle, according to DPS.

A trooper performed a PIT maneuver near Camelback Road. We're told the vehicle stopped but then attempted to take off again.

At that point DPS patrol cruisers were used to pin the vehicle. A male driver was taken into custody.

He was checked out by medical personnel who say he showed signs of impairment.

The man is being booked into jail for DUI and there were no reported injuries.
