A fatal crash slowed traffic in both directions on Interstate 17 Friday afternoon.
Trooper Kameron Lee said the crash happened at 1:52 p.m. when a vehicle hit a pedestrian walking on the southbound side of the freeway.
The pedestrian, a man, was thrown over the barrier onto the northbound side. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, where he later died.
The crash temporarily blocked the HOV and left lanes of I-17 for near Northern Avenue.
The crash caused a backup of several miles in the northbound lanes.
