The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said a suspicious device, likely a pipe bomb, was found Thursday near Chino Valley.

According to a news release sent out Friday afternoon, a man was out picking up trash along Outer Loop Road when he found the device and contacted YCSO. The Sheriff's Office then contacted the Arizona Department of Public Safety to dispatch their bomb technicians.

The device had an exposed wire and was wrapped in tape, according to the release.

Bomb technicians hit the device with a "high pressure blast of water" to cause it to react, either to explode or be rendered useless. The device did not react and was determined to be safe, said YCSO.

Officials do not know much about the device, where it was made or how it got along the side of the road, but said "it appeared the device had been in place for some time."

Anyone with information is asked to contact YCSO at 928-711-3260. The case number is 17-004976.
