Troopers with the Department of Public Safety are searching for an escaped felon near Camp Verde.

Around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, DPS took to Twitter to warn people in the area to avoid hitchhikers.

According to a police spokesperson, the suspect fled from troopers after a crash on I-17 between SR 196 and Cherry Road.

Earlier in the evening, a trooper was working speed enforcement at milepost 268 when a white Toyota passed him at 115 miles per hour.

The trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the suspect continued to evade him, a DPS spokesperson said. At milepost 278 on I-17, the speeding car failed to negotiate a curve and went off the Interstate and rolled the car multiple times.

The driver fled the area on foot, officials said. However, a passenger in the car was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities are urging drivers to avoid picking up hitchhikers as a precaution.

Multiple law enforcement agencies have come together to search for the missing suspect.

No additional information has been released and an investigation is ongoing.
