Valley emergency crews undergo training for active shooter situations

Emergency crews are changing the way they respond to active shooters.

Scottsdale, and at least two other Valley cities, recently bought body armor for their fire departments. Firefighter-paramedics also receive training how to go into mass casualty scenes before the danger is fully over.

"The sooner we get to the patient in a safe and efficient manner, triage them, control the bleeding, and then extract them to get them to a higher level of care," Battalion Chief Brian Read said.

In the past firefighters were trained to stage a safe distance away until an attacker was taken down.
