A bank robbery suspect fatally shot by police after leading officers on a chase across Tucson, stealing a police car, carjacking a citizen's vehicle and shooting at police during two separate confrontations has been identified as a 31-year-old ex-convict.

Arizona Department of Corrections records say Jesus Isaac Rael served prison terms on multiple convictions in Maricopa and Yuma counties for crimes that included armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Police say the series of events Thursday began in Marana when police tried to stop the suspect wanted in a Wednesday bank robbery and ended in Tucson near the University of Arizona campus in the suspect's second shootout with officers.

The intervening pursuit resulted in the closing of southbound Interstate 19 and other roads.
