Authorities say a U.S. citizen has been arrested trying to smuggle marijuana into the country in the back of his car.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, agents working an immigration checkpoint on I-19 near Nogales stopped a vehicle Tuesday night for additional inspection.

Inside the Chrysler Concorde agents found eight bundles of marijuana in trash bags in the trunk.

In total, authorities say the seizure amounts to 174 pounds, worth an estimated $86,000.

The suspect, a 34-year-old man from Apache Junction, was arrested for drug smuggling.
