An on-duty Gila River police officer has been taken to the hospital after being involved in a crash with a school bus in Sacaton.

Bart Graves with Arizona Department of Public Safety said the officer has a broken femur and head injuries and is currently in surgery at Chandler Regional Hospital.

There were six children on the bus, said Graves. He said none were hurt, but Gila River police officer Caroline Brown said in an email that one child was taken to the hospital "for an evaluation."

The crash happened at 6:08 a.m. Thursday morning along Casa Blanca Road in residential area. However, details on what led to the crash were still under investigation.

Sacaton is located about 40 miles southeast of Phoenix between Sun Lakes and Casa Grande.
