Three Valley freeways will close for improvement projects this weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Just like the clever message boards we all love so much, you'll enjoy this: "At least ADOT is providing us with some CLOSURE. Weekend closure that is."

Cue the rimshot, and we can thank ADOT's Doug Nintzel for that joke!

Here are the details of the scheduled restrictions, along with detour information:

  • Westbound I-10 closed between 51st and 67th avenues from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 19) for work on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway interchange. Westbound I-10 on-ramps at 27th, 35th and 43rd avenues also closed. I-10 westbound traffic exiting at 51st Avenue will detour on McDowell Road or Van Buren Street. However, due to heavy traffic you might consider other routes, including northbound SR 51 or northbound I-17 to westbound/southbound Loop 101 in the West Valley.
  • Westbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed between Hayden and Scottsdale roads from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 19) for widening project. Westbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Pima Road/Princess Drive also closed. Primary detour is Hayden Road north to Legacy Boulevard west and then south on Scottsdale Road to re-enter Loop 101. However, expect heavy traffic and consider alternate routes, including exiting Loop 101 to westbound Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and then using northbound Scottsdale Road or Tatum Boulevard to re-enter Loop 101. You can also always take routes that include northbound SR 51 or northbound I-17 to Loop 101.
  • I-17 closed in both directions at Pinnacle Peak Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 17) for bridge work at the larger interchange being constructed there. Pinnacle Peak Road also will be closed in both directions at I-17. Freeway traffic will detour along the off- and on-ramps at Pinnacle Peak Road. Expect heavy traffic and consider other alternate routes, including 19th Avenue.

Have a safe and wonderful weekend!
