Two months ago, Jovanna Calzadillas was one of hundreds of others who were shot in Las Vegas at a music festival. Doctors told her husband, Francisco Calzadillas, to prepare for the worst.

"It was very hard for me to make the decision to keep her alive, but we made it because we felt as a family it wasn't her time," said Calzadillas.

Calzadillas was right.

Now, Joanna Calzadillas is awake and alert. She laughed for the first time on Thanksgiving, and is starting to string words together again.

"It was emotional. I'm happy, but at the same time, emotional, because we were always in the dark," Francisco Calzadillas said.

Joanna Calzadillas is now being treated in her home of Phoenix. She has several weeks of physical therapy ahead.

Francisco Calzadillas said it will be a long and tough road, but he is not taking any moments for granted.

"If I ask her for a kiss, she'll kiss me. She'll hold my hand. She knows my name, she remembers other people's names," he added. "She is very strong and very determined."

There is a GoFundMe for Jovanna Calzadillas. All money will help to pay her medical expenses.
