PHILADELPHIA — Three people in Philadelphia were killed in a head-on crash caused by a driver who had been stabbed more than ten times.

According to local news station ABC6, the crash happened early Wednesday morning.

Police said an Audi sedan and SUV were in opposing lanes of traffic. The sedan crossed the center line and struck the SUV head-on.

Three of four people inside the SUV were killed. A surviving occupant was said to be in critical condition.

ABC6 says the driver of the Audi was taken to the hospital where doctors found that he had been stabbed multiple times.

"When he gets to the hospital, doctors tell the police that are on the scene that the male victim who is a John Doe has over ten stab wounds to his chest and stomach. Investigators did find a bloody knife in the sedan that the male was driving," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said, according to ABC6.

The circumstances surrounding the stabbing are not yet known.

ABC6 did not say what condition the stabbed driver was in after the crash.
