Hayley Geftman-Gold, a vice president for CBS and senior attorney, was fired by the network over social media comments she made referring to the victims of Sunday's Las Vegas massacre as “Republican gun toters," the Washington Post reported.
Geftman-Gold, who had been with the company for one year, reportedly said in a Facebook comment, "I'm actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans are republican gun toters."
The comments came as news broke that 59 people were killed, and hundreds more were wounded, during a country music festival featuring artist Jason Aldean.
“This individual, who was with us for approximately one year, violated the standards of our company and is no longer an employee of CBS,” the company said in a statement to the Washington Post.
“Her views as expressed on social media are deeply unacceptable to all of us at CBS. Our hearts go out to the victims in Las Vegas and their families.”
The Washington Post reported that the right-leaning organization The Daily Caller first brought attention to Geftman-Gold's social post.
The post has since been deleted.
The news comes on a rough day for the network.
Monday afternoon, CBS News erroneously reported that legendary rock artist Tom Petty had died, based on a Los Angeles PD source. The Los Angeles police later said that it had "inadvertently provided" information to outlets such as CBS, forcing CBS to retract its previous story.
