A passenger was arrested at Miami International Airport for attempting to smuggle nine live birds into the United States.

In a media release on Tuesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the passenger flew in to Miami on a flight from Havana, Cuba on Jan. 9.

The unidentified passenger was selected for additional screening, according to the release, and that is when officers found six birds inside individual tubes concealed in a fanny pack and another three in the passenger’s groin area.

The birds were turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Miami Quarantine Station.

Smuggling live animals into the U.S. is illegal according to federal law.
