A woman suffered a spinal injury after being shot by her ex-boyfriend at her Gilbert apartment.

Gilbert Police report that on October 12, a man, later identified as 32-year-old Philip John Buggs Jr., called 911 saying his girlfriend had been shot. When the dispatcher asked if she was breathing, Buggs reportedly said, "He wished she wasn't."

Police detained Buggs, whom they found sitting on the stairs at the apartment near Val Vista Drive and Pecos Road.

The victim reportedly told police that Buggs knocked on the door, but she refused to let him in. After a while, she went out to her patio, when Buggs jumped the wall and forced her into the apartment at gunpoint. He then allegedly shot her in the chest.

Police say the woman was unable to move her legs and suffered multiple organ injuries.

Police report that Buggs has an extensive criminal history in Kansas, including domestic violence charges and has a current warrant for his arrest.

He is being held on a $1 million bond for attempted second-degree murder.
