A witness tracked down and retrieved stolen engineering equipment worth $3,000 in Phoenix.

Phoenix police report that on September 27 an engineering company was using a "utility line locating transmitter" near 7th Avenue and Buckeye Road when it was stolen.

Engineering crews were using the device to locate main water lines.

A witness reportedly told police that he spotted the transmitter outside a liquor store near 15th Avenue and Pima Street.

When he went to retrieve the transmitter, he was allegedly confronted by 52-year-old Kenneth Andrew Porter, who attempted to leave with it. The witness was able to yank the equipment from Porter and followed him until police arrived.

Porter has been charged with theft.
