PHOENIX — A Phoenix man allegedly stole money from his deaf and blind father to access Asian dating sites and buy survival gear.

On Monday, Maricopa County prosecutors charged John Eugene Bennett, age 67, with theft from a vulnerable adult. Court records show that his father has multiple illnesses and is deaf and blind.

Police say Bennett stole over $21,000 from his father's bank accounts and credit cards over three years. Court records show that he made 215 Amazon purchases, mostly of survival gear. Investigators also say they found 24 charges to Asian dating sites.

Bennett allegedly admitted to making the purchases but said he had his father's permission to charge the dating sites. His dad reportedly told him, "he was hopeful he would find a spouse."

Bennett is scheduled to appear for his first court appearance on August 30.
