File this story under reasons to keep the car locked.

Gilbert police have recommended charges against a 21-year-old man after he allegedly attempted to break into a dozen vehicles last month.

Police said Brian Richard Mahony searched neighborhoods for unlocked vehicles over a fifteen-day period. None of the vehicles were damaged, just unlocked at the time, according to police.

Mahony then took whatever he could find in order to sell or trade for drugs, police said. He was arrested on November 16 after reportedly admitting to the crimes, according to records.

Police said they found many of the stolen items in his house near Val Vista Drive and Williams Field Road. Police estimated their worth at more than $3,100.

Mahony faces 12 counts of burglary.
