GILA BEND, AZ — A man was charged for using fake identification to hide a previous arrest in a run for Gila Bend Justice of the Peace.

On Thursday the Maricopa County Attorney's Office filed charges against Gary David Whalen, 50, of Gila Bend.

Whalen is accused filing primary election documents in Maricopa county under a false name. Investigators say Whalen filed forms to run for the Gila Bend Justice of the Peace in 2018 under "the Honorable Garrison Stone."

Court records show that "Garrison Stone did not exist but was a false identity of Gary David Whalen." Whalen has a prior arrest for domestic violence but was not convicted, according to court records.

Investigators say Whalen used a false identity because his personal history may have disqualified him from that office.

He has been charged with identity theft and filing false election forms. He is scheduled to answer the charges in court on October 28.
