Trader Joe’s no longer the top-ranked US grocer; Sprouts slips in latest study

A new ranking of the top grocery stores in the U.S. shows how competitive the supermarket business has become and how chains that constantly innovate are able to win over consumers.

National data science firm Dunnhumby released its rankings of the top supermarkets on Jan. 8, with San Antonio, Texas-based H-E-B as the No. 1 grocer in the U.S. for the first time.

Dunnhumby’s previous ranking had California-based Trader Joe’s in the top spot.

The Dunnhumby list ranked grocers based on the annual Retailer Preference Index, or RPI. The index evaluates retailers based on several factors, including price, quality, convenience and speed.
