With their businesses declared as essential amid earlier lockdowns in the state, Arizona construction firms fared better in retaining employees than the rest of the country during the closures caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to a survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America and Autodesk, 68% of the Arizona firms surveyed did not have to furlough or lay off employees, while only 50% of construction firms nationwide reported not having to furlough or lay off anyone. The survey included 26 Arizona firms and 2,005 nationally.

Nonetheless, many Arizona firms are still having trouble filling existing positions, with 72% of respondents reporting they were having a hard time filling hourly craft positions in the state, far above the national rate of 52% saying they had trouble filling those jobs.
