Even while reeling from the effects of Covid-19, small business owners around the nation in May showed signs of increased confidence for the future, according to a new survey by the National Federation of Independent Business.

The NFIB’s Small Business Optimism Index increased by 3.5 points to 94.4, with improvements in eight of the index’s component categories that helped reverse an overall decline in April, at 90.9.

The Optimism Index was above 104 during the first two months of 2020, and had reached its highest level ever in September 2018, at 107.9.

The index’s fluctuations are measured against 1986’s first monthly survey results, which are considered as 100.
