With the coronavirus pandemic postponing Pac-12 sports for Arizona State University and University of Arizona through the end of the year, the competition has turned to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report's Best College rankings.

Last year, ASU and UArizona tied at No. 117 on the 2020 U.S. News & World Report ranking of the top U.S. universities.

This year, however, UArizona pulled ahead, ranking No. 97 overall, up 20 spots from last year's ranking —and No. 40 among public universities.

UArizona President Robert Robbins said he was thrilled to see his school make such incredible gains.

"Our university has remained unwavering in its focus on providing a world-class education during this unprecedented time in our nation's history," he said.

ASU also moved up in the rankings, this year to No. 103 overall — and No. 46 among public universities.
