PHOENIX — Kayaks, big-screen TVs and other bulky items stretch as far as the eye can see inside Amazon.com Inc.'s largest fulfillment center in Arizona.

The Amazon Phx7 building off 75th Avenue and I-10 — at over a million square feet — handles the non-sort heavy, bulky items that don’t fit in a standard size tote.

The Phoenix building, which opened in 2011, has more than 1,000 employees who work 24/7 to ship larger items including furniture, sun canopies, hockey sticks and riding lawnmowers to customers across the country, said Scott LeCates, site leader for Amazon’s Phx7.

“We have over 3 million items and ship out a few hundred thousand items weekly,” LeCates said. “More than 50% of the items sold are for small- and medium-sized businesses.”
