Ford Explorer helped popularize a genre that now has a host of excellent competitors, but it remains somewhat unique.
For one thing, it costs more than most midsize SUVs. My 2020 tester, the top-of-the-line Platinum, prices from $59,445, more than 20K above the base XLT.
It’s loaded, of course. And while it looks sharp, Platinum’s interior doesn’t reach the luxury territory its price might suggest. Consider Lexus GX460 starts at $55,050 with a similar outdoorsy personality, though it hasn’t been redesigned since 2010.
So why does Explorer cost more?
