Chambers of commerce, universities, hospitals agree with Ducey about bar closures

A growing coalition of powerful businesses, universities and other organizations are defending Gov. Doug Ducey’s decision to shutter Arizona bars to slow the spread of Covid-19.

After a lawsuit by dozens of Grand Canyon State bar owners was filed against Ducey, challenging his ability to use executive orders to close businesses, some of the most prominent organizations in the state have let the Arizona Supreme Court know they side with the governor.

The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Greater Phoenix Leadership, the Arizona Fraternal Order of Police, the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association and the Arizona Board of Regents are just some of the organizations that have filed amicus briefs with the Supreme Court in support of Ducey.

The Arizona Capitol Times reported that the Arizona Board of Regents, which oversees the state university system, wrote in its brief that “Bars such as those surrounding the universities are breeding grounds for Covid-19.”
