President Donald Trump announced Thursday he intends to nominate Sethuraman “Panch” Panchanathan, Arizona State University’s executive vice president of ASU Knowledge Enterprise, to be the next director of the National Science Foundation.

Panchanathan was appointed to the National Science Board, which establishes foundation policy and advises the foundation and the president, in 2014 by President Barack Obama.

He was the first American of Indian origin to be appointed to the board.

Panchanathan will succeed France Cordova when her six-year term as director ends in 2020, according to an announcement from the National Science Foundation.
