The Arizona Board of Regents approved a proposal from Arizona State University to build a $115 million multipurpose arena that will be home to the school’s men’s hockey team.

ABOR approved the proposal Thursday after it was approved by its Finance, Capital and Resources Committee earlier in this month.

Construction on the new 5,000-seat arena is set to begin in January 2021 and will be completed by December 2022.

While the arena will include two sheets of ice and be the home of the Sun Devil men’s hockey team, it will be constructed with a portable hardwood sports court so gymnastics, wrestling and volleyball can compete there. It also will be used for other events including mid-sized concerts.

The arena will be constructed in what's currently a parking lot next to a parking structure along South Packard Drive, just east of Desert Financial Arena on ASU’s Tempe campus.
