Off-duty officer falls asleep in theater with gun on lap, arrested for public intoxication

The Bakersfield Police Department has arrested an off-duty officer for public intoxication.

BPD responded to a call just after 11 p.m. Thursday about a sleeping man with a gun on his lap at Studio Movie Grill.

Officers made contact with the subject, who was identified as off-duty BPD Officer Douglas Barrier. He was found asleep and in possession of a loaded firearm on his lap.

Investigating officers determined Barrier was under the influence of alcohol.

Officer Barrier was arrested and booked into the Kern County Jail. He was also placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Studio Movie Grill was evacuated for approximately 15 minutes during the incident.
